Remember the ozone layer?
Many years ago the impact of man-made products onto the ozone layer was a 'hot' topic. Products such as hairpsrays & deodorants were the days environmental evil, because they contained CFCs, a greenhouse gas which adds to the earth's warmth.
The ozone layer plays an amazing role in reducing the amount of the sun's ultra-violet radiation, which is quite harmful, from reaching the earth. Any weakening of that layer means more radiation enters the earths atmosphere, thus greatly impacting humans & other living organisms.
Whilst greenhouse gases are a natural occurrence, such as water vapour, carbon dioxide, methane, human lifestyles, especially our products are considered to have significantly added to greenhouse warming, & eventual global warming.
Even though their has been a shift in the right direction, the damage may be irreversible.
The challenge continues to be to understand our environment better to make better choices.
The changing climate
Climate change or global warming as it is also known, is the result of increases in the earth's average temperature, & thus changing weather conditions. Rather than greenhouse gases soaking up the heat from the sun & leaving the earth's atmosphere, some of it is remaining to make the earth warmer.
The challenge of climate change is to anticipate its likely consequences such as increased natural disasters & human health concerns, so that we can ultimately adapt to our new surroundings.
